|
|
I have a g3 300mhz Powerbook that does not have any os on it at the moment. I get the beautiful mac tadaa when it powers us, but the boot screen just sits there . I downloaded the PPC arch installation disk for Gentoo, but I can't seem to get it to boot. I am a newbie when it comes to macs. Is there something that I'm not doing right?
Brought the PB to the local mac service shop before they went belly up and they couldn't install 9 or OS X on the power book. It may be what is called I believe an "old-world" mac, but I am note sure. How can one tell?
Thanks in advance for any help!

This sounds exactly the same problem that I have with my iMac G3, so it doesn't appear limited to the powerbook. You might like to keep an eye on my thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-519770.html to see if anyone puts any suggestions there.
For anyone who thinks they may know what is doing this, I have full details of my iMac in this other thread. Helping either of us should hopefully show both of us what is wrong!
Thankyou. |

|

It seems that I have a Wallstreet. I will not be 100% sure until I get home. It is a 300mhz G3 with 192 mg of ram. I seem to remember a 1999 date on it, but I am sure that the keyboard is not bronze.....so it must be a Wallstreet. It could also be the Lombard, but I am fairly sure that it is not. As far as booting, I have Gentoo PPC 2006.1 on a cd. I tried multiple key combinations, but I can't seem to get anything. I think that I mentioned in the previous message, that my mac friends at the service center couldn't get it to boot OSX or 9 (couldn't try anything else, because they didn't have the disks) |

I have confimed through the sites that were recommended to me that it is a Wallstreet. I tried to boot into open-firmware but can't seem to do so. I've tried the keystroke while booting and after booting and everything else. |

not sure if this was mentioned, but when you power on your machine, you can hold down the letter c. this will or should boot your cd. |

Here is how I got my G3 powerbook to boot the 2006.1 live CD:
Get into Open Firmware. To do this, restart, and then as the
startup chime starts to fade away, hit the key combination (option-OpenApple-O-F).
It may take a few tries, but eventually you will get it and find yourself in a white
screen with a command prompt. At the prompt type
Note the colon and the comma and the backward slashes. |

I did try the c option at first. My mac friends got it to boot off of a os 9 disk but it would not install it. I've been unable to get it to boot the gentoo disk.....I'll try the open firm ware again in a little bit. |

I guess also, be aware that many older CD drives cannot read all CD-R media. It may be worth trying different brands / write speeds to see if that helps the machine see the burnt disk. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

I'll have to give that try... only does not being able to boot into open-firm ware mean anything omnious? Also, anybody have any suggestions on brands/speeds to try? |

Hold those keys down before you power on the machine. It should boot into open firmware. Every Macintosh should boot into openfirmware this way. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |
