gnome only starts in failsafe mode

i use gdm to start gnome, but it only loads up to the point, where the splash-window says "loading window manager" and then it stops, with the splash screen and a white screen in the background.

gnome starts well, when i select "gnome failsafe" in gdm, but there still is something wrong, as some other things dont' work right, like reading the correct $PATH.

has anybody a clue ?
