i have a benq 1640, a seagate 80gig ide hd, and good verbatim 16speed dvd discs
some time ago .. i used windows with this hardware and this discs, i burn with nero often data dvds, i was able to burn with 16speed
now in k3b, a dvd takes 8 minutes .. or a little bit more, i use the same hardware, the same discs, but why is it slower??? in k3b i have never see him go over 10speed
Code: |
hdparm /dev/hdd
/dev/hdd:
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
|
i can read all dvds at this drive with 16speed .. 21mb/s.., but why is burning dvds so slow in linux/k3b?!?! |

have you tried burning as root?
is the speed set up correctly in k3b?
are you doing alot of disk activity? _________________ "WARNING: you may LOL"

Hello, I have the same problem:
The burn speed of the device (benq dw1640) was fine (real 16x) at windows2k (nero), debian sarge (k3b), and slax livecd (k3b). But using Gentoo, it takes a bit more of time, with k3b as well as gnomebaker. Interesting is, that with nero for linux the speed is higher than with k3b. I tried several kernel options, switching from gentoo-sources to vanilla-sources, and remerging k3b with other use-flag (hal).
I already postet the problem in another (german) forum (http://www.gentooforum.de/artikel/10250/k3b---Brenngeschwindigkeit-zu-gering-cddvd.html), and I asked some guys in IRC, but the problem is still unsolved.
Anyone using gentoo who can write DVDs in 16x speed with a burning software not nero?
I am thankful for any information/ideas!
I hope you have solved the problem in the meantime and can tell me how?
Greetings,
Christian |

I would burn a dvd with cdrecord 2.01.01a23 and one with growisofs 7 in verbose mode and compare the burning time. Burn as root as long as you are trying to solve the speed problem. k3b is just a frontend for dvd burning with growisofs (dvd+rw-tools). |

k3b is just a frontend. You do the burning stuff with dvd+rw-tools. How is the speed with cdrecord? |

Thank you for your replies!
I tried manual burning with growisofs7 and had the same problem. With cdrecord I got the same results, but interesting information:
Code: | root@mainframe ~ # cdrecord -sao -v -dummy driveropts=burnfree speed=16 dev=/dev/hdc /home/ftpuser/dvd.iso
Writing time: 291.029s
root@mainframe ~ # cdrecord -sao -v driveropts=burnfree speed=16 dev=/dev/hdc /home/ftpuser/dvd.iso
Writing time: 367.475s |
"-dummy" just disables the laser while burning, like the simulate option in K3B. Where does this (big) time difference may come from?
Edit#1: The curious thing is, that burning with K3B works correctly, when startet from a Slax LiveCD. What is the difference between Gentoo and Slax - only the kernel? I already switched to vanilla :-/ |
