elinks > links

anyway...

""Please re-emerge app-text/poppler-bindings with the gtk USE flag set"

is self explanatory.

echo "app-text/poppler-bindings gtk" >> /etc/portage/package.use && emerge -1 poppler-bindings

should fix it.

well, take a look at the python problem...

Quote:
!!! dev-lang/python-2.4.3 -r1 does not actually support the tk USE flag!

and i said

Quote:

this is a simple problem to solve:
USE="-tk" emerge python

now the problem is

""Please re-emerge app-text/poppler-bindings with the gtk USE flag set"

so go into /etc/make.conf and (yes) just add gtk to that USE="..." line, inside the quotes.

then
emerge poppler-bindings && emerge gnome

I thought it was called partition magic...

EDIT: ...where did this come from...? Wrong thread. <_<

i hate links too.

i considered suggesting you focus on getting X up and running and then install firefox binaries to use for the web, but I feared you would want gnome right away. at any rate, X will be shorter to emerge than gnome and it might be worth considering, but whatever.

Sonicbhoc: That (apparently) worked fine. After following your directions, which seemed to proceed well, I then re-emerged gnome and gnome-screensaver without any further error messages appearing at the end. However, there was the message "IMPORTANT: 1 config files in /etc need updating." However, I am a bit overwhelmed by the mass of instructions for this in "emerge -- help config." Are there any simpler instructions for this available to me? Many thanks for your assistance

Erik: I received your messages after I had received Sonicbhoc's advice, which I followed, with results subsequently reported. Before I proceed further (on the basis of an apparently successful re-emerging of "gnome and gnome-screensaver," do I now need to "emerge poppler-bindings && emerge gnome"? By the way, I already had "gtk" listed in the USE line in /etc/make-conf (and always have had since the start of my attempt to install gnome.

On the "links" issue, I much refer Mozilla Firefox, but I believe that at this stage we can wait to get gnome finally up and running and then download the Firefox. Am I correct?

Unless I hear otherwise from you, I will now proceed to follow the further instructions from the Gentoo Gnome Installation site.

you're doing fine. follow his instructions, they're better than mine.

to update your config files, use etc-update. run it and if you haven't changed the file it lists, just use option -5.

dispatch-conf >>>> etc-update

dispatch-conf has a diff built in so you can see the differences, and allows you to edit the files before you merge changes.

Erik: I now wish to discuss the following instructions from the Gnome Installation HOWTO, what I have achieved (or not achieved):

"Next we'll clean up the remaining runlevels.

"Code Listing 2.7: Adding hald and avahi-dnsconfd to the default runlevel

"# /etc/init.d/hald start
"# rc-update add hald default

(THAT WORKED FINE.)

"# /etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd start
"# rc-update add avahi-dnsconfd default

(THAT DID NOT WORK, EVEN THOUGH I HAD AVAHI IN THE /ETC/MAKE.CONF USE= LINE.)

"First Impressions

Let us first take a look at what we just built. Exit your root shell and log on as a regular user. We will configure our session to run GNOME when we issue the startx command (see also Using startx in the X Server Configuration Howto):

Code Listing 2.8: Having GNOME as default desktop environment

$ echo "exec gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc

(THAT COMMAND SEEMED TO WORK OK.)

Now start your graphical environment by running startx:

Code Listing 2.9: Starting GNOME

$ startx

(THAT COMMAND DID NOT WORK -- WITH SOME ERROR MESSAGE QUOTES AS FOLLOWS:)

"(EE) Unable to locate/open config file...
"(EE) Using default built-in configuration (53 lines)
"(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)

"Fatal server error:
"Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all frame buffer devices

(END ERROR MESSAGE QUOTES, AND BACK TO INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS)

If all goes well, you should be greeted by GNOME. Congratulations. Now let us take a look at how you can configure GNOME to suit your needs.

(WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?)

try doing that again , after emerge avahi

now, as for not being able to start up gnome, you need to configure X first.

try X -configure; X -config xorg.conf.new; and let me know what happens.

Erik: the "avahi" stuff worked fine.

"X -configure" seemed to work all right except it apparently couldn't find the mouse.

"X -config xorg.conf.new" gave the same series of error messages I quoted in my last forum message.

Does this help?

edit xorg. conf.new and change
"/dev/mouse"
in the mouse section to
"/dev/input/mice"

Erik: In following your most recent instructions re the mouse, something very strange is happening:

I edit xorg.conf.new using nano. I find a /dev/mouse designation in the "input device" section, I edit it to read /dev/input/mice, than save it via cntrl-o, exit via cntrl-x, bring it back via cat to double check to make certain the edit has occurred, then I run "X -configure" which tells me that "xorg is not able to detect your mouse, and I go back into xorg.conf.new and find the input device section has reverted to /dev/mouse instead of /dev/input/mice. All my previous nano edits have worked all right. I wonder what's happening here.

when you run X -configure, xorg.conf.new is being regenerated. so run that first, then edit the new configuration file it generated, then run
X -config xorg.conf.new
to tell it to run X with the new configuration file.

spadearcher,

X -configure writes a whole new xorg.conf over the top of your fixed one.

Ensure that your xorg.conf file is in /etc/X11/
Make the edit to change mouse device, change to be a normal user, then run the startx command.

Erik and Neddy: My "xorg.conf.new" file is currently in my "/root" directory. It is not in my "/etc/X11" directory (although a "sample" xorg.conf is.

Anyway, I have first tried Erik's instructions -- which when executed now (mysteriously?) have resulted in a monitor screen that announces in blue "H.V FREQUENCY OVER RANGE," and then goes black!

And that's as far as I've now gotten. Assuming I can get the screen "within" range, do I then move my xorg.conf.new file to /etc/X11, and follow through with Neddy's instructions?

Isn't this fun!

spadearcher,

That message means that Xorg and your monitor failed to exchange EDID data.
X will have tried 640 x 480 at 60 Hz under those conditions. Its not a pretty sight.

We need to know your monitor and the Xorg graphics card driver you are using.
Some drivers ignore manual settings

Sight of your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be really helpful.
If you cannot post them,
Code:
emerge nopaste
and use that to put them on a pastebin website.
Put the links it gives you in your post

Neddy: I took these files (one is massive) from Ubuntu. Hope they give you the info you need.

root@ubuntu:/etc/X11# cat xorg.conf
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

spadearcher,

Unfortunately, thats not helpful. Your Gentoo files will have shown the errors you are having, However, try this.

Boot Ubuntu then do
Code:
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/<gentoo_parition> /mnt/gentoo
You now have your fully working Ubuntu with gentoo attached.
Continue with
Code:
 cd /mnt/gentoo/etc/X11
to get to your gentoo /etc/X11 and rename your xorg.conf
Next steal (its GPL, so you are allowed to) Unbuntus xorg.conf for gentoo with
Code:
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ./

Its the same Xorg, look in the log at
Code:
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
so the same xorg.conf should JustWork.
Look at Ubuntus mouse settings ... /dev/input/mice.

Reboot into Gentoo and test

Erik: I edited xorg.conf.new, putting in your suggestions, but when I tried to execute X -config xorg.conf.new, I got an error message stating "DefaultDepth is not a valid keyword." So, I took out the edits.

Neddy: In Ubuntu, /mnt/gentoo/etc/X11 does not have an xorg.conf file (only an xorg.conf.example file) and I cannot locate another xorg.conf file (or even an xorg.conf.new file) elsewhere in /mnt/gentoo to move into the X11 directory. So, I don't quite know what file it is you want me to "rename," and where I find it.

Neddy: I finally located the xorg.conf.new file in /mnt/gentoo/root. D you want me to move that into X11?
