Hi
I've got an old IBM (one of those ancient, heavy rebuild things - among others), with 256 MB RAM, and a Pentium II 400 mHz and a S3 Trio videocards.
After install I reboot, and what do I get:
Code: | Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill idle task |
Som say: swap memory sticks. But my question is: Oh but why?
This machine (the machines are digging... ) used to function properly when I installed it with an 2005 install cd (yes, Gentoo), but for some idiotic reason (not remembering which), I deceided to re-install, but this time using a 2006.0, and later on 2006.1 install-cd, and guess what, neither did work (same kernel panic), and the 2005-cd (not remembering which version) are no longer in my posession. But I did (just yesterday) make a working install with Kubuntu 5.10 (which I have kept not knowing why, it's not 6.10) right out of the box, but that's not the same, is it?
Any thoughts on this.
Is it as simple as just to get hold of an older kernel version, and is that just as simple?
(Sorry for the melodramatic post, I was just in the mood, do not let that be a reason for not taking my post seriously )

Installing from a 2005 disk won't help unless you are having troubles with the kernel running from the CD. When you install the kernel in gentoo you get whatever the latest kernel in portage is. |

I know, the disk wouldn't help me now, but the kernel-version that was used at the time of the release was working... If I had any luck maybe there would be a kernel on the disc... sigh, but I had no disc.
Anyway, the problem is now svolved.
I used an older kernel from the portage. Namely gentoo-sources-2.6.15-gentoo-r1. Tried first the hardened version (2.6.14-r7), that worked too, so I was bold enough to step up and go ahead with 2.6.15, thinking I just may get splashscreen working at some point. And now that old hag is up and running, Yahooo. No GUI yet, but soon, in a week or so... And as soon as I start running into more problems I'll let you know, and plea for help.
