When I switched from kernel 2.4 to >2.6 the old way of writing CDs as normal user (with suid) wasn't possible.
I worked-around that by using the ck-patched gentoo-sources which made that possible again (and was the easiest and best and perhaps only- except from scsi-emulation- which I found.
Now that topic came to my mind again, so I was wondering which techniques for communicating with burning hardware there exist and which you use...
Cheers,

I'm using libata now on all of my machines. Libata is a library on top of the linux SCSI layer.
Libata is also in 2.4 and used to be the common, shared layer for all Sata drivers. Recent versions of libata support not only SATA controllers, but also IDE interfaces. Burnig on libata has been without headaches for me all the time, I'm burning as non-root.
As I've said, on my computers I use libata only. I completely disabled the whole old ATA layer. What you get is /dev/sd* devices for harddiks (also for ide disks) and /dev/sr* for CDROMS just like when you're using SCSI or SATA. Burning apps like growisofs, cdrecord and friends are working great here.
B.T.W. You'll need kernel 2.6.19 to have IDE support in libata and hence it's not working on all controllers. I'm testing JMicron, Intel PIIX, VIA and hpt370. Only hpt370 isn't OK. Other than using a very recent linux kernel, I'm using no extra stuff like patchsets.
So, you've got my vote. I'm using libata. _________________ Alle dingen moeten onzin zijn. |

Hi,
I use ide-cd for the burner, I burn as user and I let k3b handle the permissions. No suid stuff needed.
Works great so far. _________________ Study finds stunning lack of racial, gender, and economic diversity among middle-class white males
