Hello, I recently purchased two 500GB drives that I would like to put into a raid1 mirror on my nvidia raid controller. I do not want this drive to be my / or /boot. It is just a separate drive that I would like mirrored. Since it is not going to be my main drive should I not use dmraid at all and just use the kernel raid? Which one would give me the best performance and stability? I do not dual boot into any other OS'es.

Thanks,
Nick

I recently set up a (sw)raid1 system with luks encryption, and I used the kernel's raid modules and adadm for userspace raid control. From what I understand dmraid is getting old (and not worth using anymore (??))

OTOH I am not sure whether nvidia raid controller ser supported for hardware raid.

Cheers
V.

I saw a post from NeddySeagoon about dmraid https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-512798-highlight-dmraid+boot.html and had another few questions. It sound like I should use kernel swraid and not dmraid.

When doing kernel software raid is there any benefit in setting the bios to use raid or should I just set them up as separate drives? Should I just build the machine on the single drive then add the two drives and setup the software raid?

Any clues to how much overhead swraid is going to eat up? I am not too concerned with it but I wonder if it is worth the trouble. I could just split the two drives and use one to back up the other via rsync or come cpio script.

both are equally stable but have a livecd with latest dmraid executable for BIOS raid: ones in the livecd may not work. You need mdadm for kernel raid and most livecd's have it by default. Performance (as measured by bonnie++) wise, dmraid is better, only slightly though.

if you don't dual boot, there is hardly any real reason for using BIOS raid. kernel raid is less headache, probably better maintained and integrated.
