Alright so i had a working kde/xorg desktop and it was rock solid, but i hadn't set the kernel up right and i was unable to find which specific modules i needed for my hardware. So i used genkernel with all default options except i chose for it to integrate the driver for my nic instead of making it a module. As soon as i booted off of it i rebuild the ATI drivers did

Code:
modprobe fglrx

eselect opengl set ati.

After that KDE would run but now it seems to freeze at random intervals. But it still works fine for my old kernel. Also all of the hardware is working fine up until the point that it freezes, and its not hardware related because it runs fine off of the other kernel and windows.

ATI drivers: 8.0.30-r1
Kernel: gentoo-sources 2.6.18-r3

edit: forgot to mention that if i stay in command line or drop to it from kde before it crashes its fine.

Probably the easiest way is to figure out which modules you need, and add then to your other kernel setup. Boot the genkernel, but switch to the command line before KDE crashes. Then, type lsmod at a root console, and make sure all the listed modules are included in your other kernel config.

Alright, so i decided to reinstall gentoo across the board to see if it would help. The problem still seems to be there.

I think it might be due to me using the ~x86 ati drivers because i was unable to install the stable ati drivers it kept saying that it was unable to install the DRM module.

I'm using version 8.30.3-r1 of ati-drivers (~x86), and they work beautifully. Does the old kernel still work, or is that now broken, too?

The old kernel still works fine, granted since i used genkernel all the modules it had are now missing but i'm sure that's fixable. I'm willing to bet that there is a specific module that is incompatable with ati+kde. I'm just not sure which one.
