I used knoppix on a windows machine and think its great. I own a powerbook g4 and have been looking for a "mac version" of knoppix.
I came across gentoo's ppc version, and after reading information about how to use it i finally got my cd to boot.

this is what i put on the cd:

http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/ppc/2006.1/ppc32/installcd/

install-ppc-universal-2006.1.iso (this file includes: folders: boot, distfiles, docs, oldworld, snapshots, stages, and files: image.squashfs, livecd, ppc-packagelist-2006.1.txt, ppc-release-notes.txt
readme.txt)

1. I opened the file on my computer, and saved them all to a cd.
2. I rebooted my machine and booted from the cd
3. a screen came up asking what image to open, and I chose "apple"
4. it ran through a bunch of stuff and then said the following
>>Loading modules
>>Attempting to mount CD
>>No bootable medium found
>>Attempting to mount CD
>>Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>>Determining root device...
>>The root device is unspecified or not detected
>>Please specify a devied to boot or "shell" for a shell
>>boot()::

At some point in there it tried to mount hda0, hda1, hda2, hda3, etc, but found nothing. Why does it not recognize my hard drive, and why will it not load the Live CD? Am I missing a file(s)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. thank in advance.

This single file (.iso) IS an image of the install CD:

http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/ppc/2006.1/ppc32/installcd/install-ppc-universal-2006.1.iso

So download that file only. Then, in Toast go to: Copy> then drag that iso file I mentioned above to the Toast program. The put in a blank CD and click burn.

However you should know that this CD is not quite like Knoppix. It doesn't pop you into a KDE desktop. It simply puts you to a Linux command line to prep an install of Gentoo, or do other utilities from the command line.

CLI? Try the current ubuntu PPC CD. It is a live boot to a gnome ubuntu desktop. Good luck.

Actually, as of the 27th, there's an experimental PowerPC LiveCD that's a working Gnome environment just like the x86 LiveCD. Feel free to try it out and let us know how it works.

Well, I just tried booting from the new gentoo ppc live cd... it loaded like the other version, but when it tried to mount the root (i think thats what it said) it couldnt find anything. It went through a series of lines like this:

mounting ... : /dev/hda
mounting ... : /dev/hda1
mounting ... : /dev/hda2
mounting ... : /dev/hda3
mounting ... : /dev/hda4
mounting ... : /dev/hda5
mounting ... : /dev/cd

then it said it couldnt mount the root and asked me to select a device to boot from.

Any ideas?

A live CD runs entirely in the RAM. A hard drive is not even touched. It should not be trying to mount any hard drive at all.

What process are you going through to burn the iso image? And what program as you using? Toast?

im using the mac disk utility to burn it as a cd master file. ive tried a few different ways and it only works as a cd/dvd master file. I thought that since the cd booted it meant that the iso file is burned correctly. Does it matter which program i use because i dont have toast?

Hm yeah that is odd. Download a trial of Dragon Burn perhaps and see if that works. http://www.ntius.com/
Something is not working out right with burning that iso for some reason.

I think there was a problem in OS X 10.3 with burning bootable isos in the disk utility. Are you using 10.3 or 10.4?

ok, let me explain about myself a little bit. I have used windows for several years, gui not cli. I have owned/used a mac for about a year, gui not cli. I have used linux (knoppix) for about 20 minutes, gui. I dont know squat about using a command line interface, so as far as using terminal goes, or verifying the md5sum, i dont have a clue as to how to begin. The only thing i know about terminal is how to get it open, beyond that im lost.

I am going to assume your using OS X to burn the image.

open the terminal and type MD5 (md5sum is for linux) and then drag the file onto the terminal window which will fill in the path to it and hit enter. it should display a hash and it should match the hash provided for the iso you downloaded.

for your reference it should match this.

# MD5 HASH

ok i tried it with the new gentoo live cd ppc 2006.1 and it returned this: e2d92b6a58256f2c05e81c3919c8a5fe
I tried it with the gentoo install_ppc_universal_2006.1.iso and got this: 5d06c13c0f12fc2ef97866781510a3ff
I also tried it with ubuntu 6.10 and it returned this: d3f9a67502363674e1850551a00330df

it doesnt look like either match the one you gave me. What does that mean?

The one I posted is the md5 of the universal cd from http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/ppc/2006.1/ppc32/installcd/ of the universal cd.

If it doesn't match it means the download was corrupted

If you got it from another source look at the .DIGESTS file for the iso you downloaded and it will have the md5 hash for it and match it against that.

76e4d31ea4af2d4ab79df518a76e497d is the md5sum of the LiveCD so it looks like your download was incomplete.
