Hi!
I installed vmare-server and vmare-server-console. Everything working fine except I cannot login into my own vmare-server.
I can login to other vmare-server enabled machine. I can login from another machine to my vmware server, but whe I login from my own machine to my own vmare-server the console just freezes.
I have:
* app-emulation/vmware-server
Latest version available: 1.0.1.29996-r4
Latest version installed: 1.0.1.29996-r4
* app-emulation/vmware-server-console
Latest version available: 1.0.1.29996-r4
Latest version installed: 1.0.1.29996-r4 |

have you recently recompiled/updated dbus?
post emerge --info. I assume you have vmware-modules installed, correct? |

Have you edited Access Restrictions in /etc/xinetd.conf
or /etc/xinet.d/vmware-authd

@3pm: Does the problem happen as root, or only for an ordinary user? If the latter, is the user a member of the vmware group? _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

I had the same problem today, and had to add the line
Quote: | only_from = 0.0.0.0 | to /etc/xinetd.d/vmware-authd. I really did want this (connect from anywhere) but it doesn't answer the question of why it wouldn't allow from localhost in the first place, as it should have, especially since it shouldn't require xinetd for localhost.
By the way, it happened for both root and normal user (who was in the vmware group). The following appeared in /var/log/messages when it happened Code: | Dec 7 20:32:46 [xinetd] FAIL: vmware-authd address from=127.0.0.1
Dec 7 20:32:46 [xinetd] START: vmware-authd pid=2778 from=127.0.0.1
Dec 7 20:32:48 [xinetd] EXIT: vmware-authd status=0 pid=2778 duration=2(sec)
Dec 7 20:35:01 [xinetd] FAIL: vmware-authd address from=127.0.0.1
Dec 7 20:35:01 [xinetd] START: vmware-authd pid=2936 from=127.0.0.1
Dec 7 20:35:02 [xinetd] EXIT: vmware-authd status=0 pid=2936 duration=1(sec)
Dec 7 20:35:33 [xinetd] Exiting... |
Bottom line, I got it working for me, but it doesn't solve the original problem. |

Thank you brycenut!
Adding only_from = 0.0.0.0 helped.
I suspected that it's something wrong with acess permissions. Anyway weird behavior... |

Just beware that by adding only_from = 0.0.0.0, you're allowing access from any host, which is a potential security hole, so make sure you've firewalled that port (unless, of course, you want to allow connections from the Internet). It's safer to add only your subnet, e.g. only_from = 192.168.0.0/24.
In any case, make sure you leave SSL turned on, under "Host|Settings|Connection" menu in the VMWare server console. |
