|
|
I have reinstalled 2006.1 with the gentoo-sources twice and recompiled twice (manually) and I keep getting:
Quote: | VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0) |
I have gone through every step in the Handbook and I can't find anything I've missed. I've stuck to the basic configuration as outlined in the handbook.
I have used both Lilo and Grub and the same problem.
This is my current Grub (with just the relevant stuff):
Quote: | root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/linux-2.6.18-gentoo-r4 root=/dev/hda3 |
the rescue portion is also per the book and same problem occurs.
fdisk:
Quote: | /dev/hda1 * 83 linux
/dev/hda2 82 linux swap
/dev/hda3 83 linux |
ftab:
Quote: | /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda3 / ext2 noatime 0 1
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosued,noexec 0 0 |
What am I overlooking?
Thanks, ron

That error almost always means that you didn't include support for either the type of filesystem used on your root partition or you left out support for your drive controller chipset. They both need to be included directly in the kernel and not configured as modules. If you think that you did include the correct support, please post the output of the "lspci" command and/or the output of the "dmesg" command. _________________

I did compile in the ext2 and 3 file systems, but not sure about the ide controller chip set so I will check that out tomorrow. I did not compile any modules into the kernel.
I'm not set up to copy/paste lspci but here is what I think is relevant from lspci:
IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 2).
Now that I think on it I'm reasonbly sure that I did include that in the compile but I will make sure later.
I gather that Grub and the rest of what i posted looks OK? I've looked at it so many times I'm cross-eyed now!!

RESOLVED:
It was a compile issue. File system incorrect entry on the ext3 subitems.
By the way how do I get RESOLVED placed in the main subject line?
Thanks for the help.

Just click the edit button on your first post and then change the subject line. _________________

Do you really want to use ext2 for you root? Depending on the partition size after a unclean shutdown the check of the filesystem will bring you alot of time to drink coffee |
