Does anyone have this card? BFG 8800GTS ?
i just picked one up for a new Core2Duo system i just built on top of my new BFG 680i SLI MotherBoard.

i've been having some issues with the install, but have now gotten everything to work, except now X freezes my system... well not really freezes, but i can't controll my usb keyboard anymore, and my screen is black, although i can still ssh in and inspect what went wrong.. i have no clue....

here is where my Xorg log left off while 'frozen' black... (the last line is the last line) i can't kill the process either.

Hi,

Try to comment out the composite extrension in xorg.conf to see if that's causing the freeze.

i just purchased an 8800 gts and after installing the card, i strapped gentoo in interactive mode, skipping the xdm service. compiled the new driver, unloaded the existing one, loaded the new one, started X and i get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left hand corner. built the 2.16.18 r5 version of the kernel and same problem.

ill try commenting out the composite extension tonight but has anybody made any progress on this?

i just purchased an 8800 gts and after installing the card, i strapped gentoo in interactive mode, skipping the xdm service. compiled the new driver, unloaded the existing one, loaded the new one, started X and i get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left hand corner. built the 2.16.18 r5 version of the kernel and same problem.

ill try commenting out the composite extension tonight but has anybody made any progress on this?

more info, please. what type of system? there is an issue right now with amd64 systems and kernels 2.6.18+. My amd64 system hardlocked when starting xorg with any kernel >=2.6.18. The solution was to manually modify Kconfig file to allow IOMMU to be disabled. IOMMU in the newer kernels requires the kernel's AGP drivers... forcing them to be used rather then nvidia's... causing my machine to lock up in the same manner you describe when i'd start xorg.

you can probably move the 9742 ebuild over to an overlay and change it's filename to reference 9746 and give it a go.. chances are that will work ok.
You'll probably still need to modify the kernel as stated in my previous post, unless you are sticking to a kernel <= 2.6.17

well, i will try both, one by one until it works. i was having this problem on a 2.6.17-r5 version as well, so im leaning towards drivers right now.

just to clarify the the system specs.

amd 64 x2 3800+ 2 gigs of ram. asus 8800gts video card.
2.6.17-r5 kernel
xorg 7.1
need anything else?

would i still have to modify the kernel even if im running pci-express graphics card?

oh. I suppose not (though I have no real idea b/c I do not have a PCI-E linux system) but it might not hurt to try it.

Please post if any of you other 8800 users get beryl/compiz going without aiglx/xgl. If you guys need any help still setting up regular stuff I do have a working configuration here so can give you all the info on that, and I run a lot of ~amd64 packages so I have tried several versions of things.
