Read up on it here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml

Edit: I am not sure i understood your question properly. Are you already using the jre properly but want a jdk from a different packages, i.e. blackdown jre + sun jdk and then not have blackdown jdk installed?

not helping much, I have blackdown jre for its 64 bit plugin for ff
I need the sun jdk for the compiler

when I try to emerge eclipse, portage wants to emerge blackdown-jdk too
but I need it to see sun's jdk

moreover when I add java to make.conf, it runs to fecth blackdown-jdk too

understand?

You have to set it using java-config-1

Code:
# java-config-1 -L
The following JDKs are available for generation-1:
1)      Sun JDK 1.4.2.13 [sun-jdk-1.4.2.13]
*)      Blackdown JDK 1.4.2.03 [blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03]

# java-config-1 -S 1
Now using sun-jdk-1.4 for the generation-1 system JDK

Hope that helps.
