I am running the 2.6.18-gentoo-r4 kernel, but the most recent system.map I have is from 2.6.11-gentoo-r6. Everything seems to work fine, but just to be safe I copied the most recent system.map into my /boot directory. Is this file really necessary or have I been courting disaster by not updating it regularly? _________________ -------------------------------------------

System.map contains debug symbols for its matching kernel, which could prove useful in case you're, well, debugging your kernel. Since you don't know what the file is for in the first place, you most probably _aren't_ debugging your kernel, and therefore would not need System.map at all ![Wink ;)](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ Free Software.
