I like many other people are more than willing to pay for guaranteed bandwidth, and this should be discussed by the gentoo community, especially with the ever increasing demands upon current servers. Surely for, say, £5 per month, this could be organised. Or maybe, even, for say £10 per month a compile on server system by which you upload your make.conf file to your area on the server and you can set a list of packages to compile remotely. I realise compiling at the server end would be very processor intensive so renice these to 20 and give an estimated number of days to compile. Hopefully some money could go back towards gentoo developers/contributers too. I can't see a real reason why this isn't practical appart from setup costs - there surely is a market? _________________ Turn off your mind

I sure M$ people would love to see if it happens. They would just dance gladly: "See? We told ya, Linux is more expensive than M$! We sell you already compiled system!".
Seriously, I think that many people (including myself) would be glad to spare some of their CPU idle for free to people who has not enough of resources to compile locally. Something like SETI, but specially for distcc
As for making money... Gentoo has a very high level of flexibility. System customization is not a virtue for most of computer users. So, how about some sort of Gentoo Consulting International - the distributed around the globe organization devoted to help small/mid-size companies to create their own corporate-specific distros for both servers and desktops based on Gentoo? |
