Hi all,

I have two gentoo boxes and have a problem with one; it doesnt start gnome-session in .xinitrc. The screen goes black and only the mouse cursor (cross) moves. No other things happen. What's wrong? I've made a new account to test with the clean environment, but the result is the same.... I have been using this environment for more than a year....:( and the other machine is working well.

w/o gnome-session Xserver works fine with xterm/twm(if set in .xinitrc).

regards,

-Tetsuji

Are you using startx? If so, switch back to the console and see what the output is. Sometimes the window manager isn't loading or something. I have also found that if I stop fighting it and just drink the gdm coolaid, my life is much easier. dbus works and things are just smoother.

yes, I'm using startx. No "failed to load xxx" message found (previously I found "failed to load module "kbd"/"mouse" or something,but I fixed). Anyway it works with xterm and twm if set in .xinitrc.

Have you tried gdm? I symlinked my .xinitrc file to .xsession and then start gdm with the "Custom" session. It runs your .xsession file.

It doesn't really address your problem but it might work.

As for startx, it sounds like the gnome startup is sitting on one of the early processes and isnt' coming up. This can be because of a lack of a dbus session ( which gdm sets up for you and requires magic in your own xinit file). Lots of thing in gnome these days are increasingly dependent on a correctly configured dbus.

Thank you for your suggestion. It seems to help me, but I have no idea how to fix. Launching gdm, the screen flickers every 4-5seconds 5 or 6 times, then the screen turns black, saying:

Code:
The display server has been shut down 6 times in the last 90 seconds.  It is likely that something bad is going on.  Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0.

Yes, something bad is going on on my side (though xterm/twm works). To tell the truth I am using nVidia's driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run). It must be the problem. I installed the driver in the normal fashion (not using ebuild in the portage).

Any suggestions?

Without the ebuild!?!? For shame!!

No seriously, that might be it. i would try the ebuild just to be sure. Aside from that though, check out the

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

file. The end is usually where it all goes bad.

Of course, it sorta sounds like you are past X and on to gnome problems. If the screen remains black with a cursor then X is running fine and its other processes that are crapping out.

sometimes there is a file called ~/.gnome-errors that can be useful.

I've never used ebuild to install nvidia driver, because portage contains older driver. But this time it worked for the bad. So I'm thinking of using it. I'm installing from scratch! X.0.log looked normal iirc, but I didn't check .gnome-errors.

Thanks!

If there are no errors in Xorg.0.log then X and nvidia are not your problems.

You might check out gnomesupport.org to see if gnome people have seen this sort of thing before.

Thanks. But everything has gone. I'll go to the appropriate forum when the cause is clear. should have known .gnome-errors.

I fresh installed X, gnome, NVIDIA (1.0-8776) driver again, but it still persists.
Xorg.0.log is normal. I want to know where gnome error message is, but in vain. All I know is something is wrong with gnome, because with "ps ax", I can see

Code:

 4809 tty2     S      0:00 gnome-session
 4811 tty2     S      0:00 /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 5
 4814 tty2     S      0:00 /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon
 4815 tty2     S      0:00 /usr/libexec/gnome_segv gnome-session 11 2.16.1
 4816 tty2     S      0:00 /usr/bin/bug-buddy --appname=gnome-session --pid=4809
 4817 tty3     R+     0:00 ps ax

I think there's something wrong with gnome...but I cannot spot it! help!

PS: As I wrote, xterm and twm work.

I have another problem, which I am not sure is related to this gnome problem; when rebooting, "Letting udev process events" step fails. Any hints?

BTW my problematic gnome-session's version number is 2.16.1.

well gnome-session is seg faulting which is trying to log a bug. unfortunately you can't see the bug its trying to log because bug-buddy isn't coming up. Hrm. Have you tried creating a new user and logging in with that? SOmetimes config files can get weird.

And my make.conf is as follows:

Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage

but I use nvidia's driver.

I want to ask someone about CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf. Will anyone copy&paste your CFLAGS here? I suspect it's the problem, especially vectorizer.

As for the udev error on boot that seems to be a common problem with the new udev-103. I get the same error on one of my boxes and haven't found a fix for it yet, still looking. It dosen't seem to affect how the box runs though.

My basic make.conf. My system is very fast and stable.
Code:

CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I have no idea what, ("-mfpmath=sse -ftree-vectorize -msse2 -ftree-vectorizer-verbose=3") these are supposed to do for you. They may or may not be your problem. Also I noticed this, VIDEO_CARDS="nv vesa fbde. Is there a reason you are using nv over nvidia and fbde sohuld be fbdev if I am not mistaken.

I would research your CFLAGS and also your graphics dirver and or card to make sure thay are not causing you problems.

Aggressive CFLAGS can lead to system instability and breakage.

One thing I can tell you for sure, I wasted 2 nights with -ftree-vectorize in my CFLAGS. Thats almost 8 hours of maintenance!

Remove it from CFLAGS and you may find your peace.
