The new version of Framebuffer looks to be setting itself up to replace
X Windows completely. I've also heard there was a major rift in the
XFree community over the issue.

I'm very interested in using Framebuffer for 3d work,
games, and multimedia. If there was a source code level emulation
of DirectX I think we could kick some major microsoft b***.

Anyone have a feel for where this is going?

What do you mean by "Framebuffer"? That's not the name of a project, it's a generic technology. You might be talking about DirectFB, which looks nice but isn't going to replace X anytime soon because not all widget sets can be used independently of X.

That was the project I was thinking of. I thought I saw some news about
SDL running with it. At least one GUI package I know of uses SDL so
programs using it will work. If KDE worked on it that would make it
workable for me.

Sorry for the confusion.

lil conufsed here... :)

So DirectFB have ported DRI into DirectFB allowing them to use OpenGL to render the display and provide much more speed etc.... correct?

Now the DRI site says "The DRI is an integral part of XFree86 4.x, and integrates with Mesa, an open source implementation of the OpenGL API." So if DRI is allready a part of XFree why dont we have OpenGL rendering the 2D display? :?

In order to have DRI-enhanced rendering on XFree86, you have to have the correct kernel modules and add a couple of lines to XF86Config. I've had DRI accelerated rendering on my X setup for about a year.
