I cannot have aplay read mp3 or ogg files.

I should say that it does read wav files without any problem, and Amarok/Kaffeine (both use Xine) can play all of these formats (wav, mp3, ogg). Only aplay will fail to read mp3/ogg.

I am using kernel 2.6.18-r3, with media-libs/alsa-lib 1.0.13 installed (as well as alsa-utils 1.0.13).

Any idea why aplay won't play?

aplay doesn't support playing those types of files. If you want to play them from the command line, you will need to install something like mpg123 or mpg321 for mp3 files and ogg123 for the ogg files.

Thanks for your reply, but I confess that I am a bit surprised, because I read everywhere that aplay is able to read multiple formats. What are these other formats it supports if it is neither mp3, nor ogg ?

man aplay:
              Recognized  sample  formats  are:  S8 U8 S16_LE S16_BE U16_LE U16_BE S24_LE S24_BE
              U24_LE U24_BE S32_LE S32_BE U32_LE U32_BE FLOAT_LE FLOAT_BE FLOAT64_LE  FLOAT64_BE
              IEC958_SUBFRAME_LE IEC958_SUBFRAME_BE MU_LAW A_LAW IMA_ADPCM MPEG GSM
Some of these may not be available on selected hardware
There are also two format shortcuts available:
              -f cd (16 bit little endian, 44100, stereo [-f S16_LE -c2 -r44100]
              -f dat (16 bit little endian, 48000, stereo) [-f S16_LE -c2 -r48000]
If no format is given U8 is used.
