Here's a bug:
media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.13 doesn't emerge on kernel 2.6.19-rc2

and another, which the above was marked as a duplicate of:

alsa-driver 1.0.13 fails to compile with linux kernel 2.6.19-rc1

Seems to be a general 2.6.19 issue.

so does that mean i should build alsa into the kernel, or use the kernel modules?

It's upto you whether to build in or use modules. If you have the system setup to use modules then that is probably the way to go. Build alsa into the kernel then add your soundcard as a module, it will keep your boot screens free of errors :)

IF you want to use 2.6.19, use alsa-driver 1.0.14_rc1 and *not* 1.0.13.
