Cannot boot from cd or dvd

I have a strange problem. I have a http://www.storageupdates.philips.com/images/dvdrw/dvdr1660_image_big.jpg

For some reason I cannot boot from a cd or dvd from this device, it burns fine and i can boot from the dvd or cd on my laptop but not my desktop.

If I try to boot from a gentoo cd, fedora dvd or any other cd or dvd then the kernel starts to load then stops at around 4%.

Any ideas?

One idea would be to upgrade the firmware ? Your problem is very strange.

Can you boot up with a retail CD ?
I mean by "retail CD" a CD that you buy somewhere, not a CD burned by yourself. Pick-up any Linux newspaper selling a CD with a distro on it (here in France, you get plenty of those every month) and try to boot on it.

Also, because of having a DVD Recorder for my TV, I noticed, for example, that the MP3 player included in the DVD Recorder could read MP3 from CD, but not from DVD.
For this last reason, try perhaps also to boot a CD instead of booting a DVD ?

It's same with either cd, dvd, burnt or retail.

I ended up putting a different cd drive in there instead and use that.

Strange problem I know, never seen anything like this before.

Does what I need now though with the extra cd drive.
