I have drm configured as module, but when I try to modprobe it I get:

FATAL: Error inserting drm (/lib/modules/2.6.18-gentoo-r4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/drm.ko): Cannot allocate memory

why?

With 2.6.18 kernel, you need a more recent driver.
Try ati-drivers-8.30.3-r1 to see if it works.
What ati card you have?
