I've set up a raid 0 configuration with 2 seagate hd's 160Gb eachone, on a nf7-s 2.0 motherboard. They are driven by onboard sylicon 3112 controller. I started up with livecd using dodmraid option
it worked. then I partitioned the array following the instructions here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid
my partition table is a little different:
1 primary 64Mb Hidden w95 fat32
2 Primary 60Gb HPFS/NTFS
3 extended 240 Gb
5 logic 1Gb Linux swap
6 logic 30Gb Linux
7 logic 10Gb Linux
8 logic 210Gb w95 fat32(lba)
then as suggested i installed winxp on partition 2.
now i've rebooted to install gentoo but this time even booting with the option dodmraid I get a kerel panic
Code: | Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) |
what am i supposed to do to have raid 0 working on gentoo too?
solved the new copy of livecd i was using was bad burned

Kernel checklist:
Driver for sylicon 3112 controller built in?
Driver for MOBO chipset built in?
Driver for whatever file-system you formated your partitions with built in (reiserfs/ext3/cfx etc.)?
Triple-check your /etc/fstab entries
Triple-check your grub.conf lines, paying particular attention to your 'root=' and 'real_root =' declarations.
Re-check the section in the guide that tells how to do this:
Code: |
Building the Kernel
This guide prefers building the kernel yourself over using genkernel. When you are building your kernel, remember to add support for the RAID (and compile as static (*), not as a module (M)):
-> Device Drivers
-> Block devices
<*> Loopback device support
<*> RAM disk support
(16) Default number of RAM disks
(8192) Default RAM disk size (kbytes)
(1024) Default RAM disk block size (bytes)
[*] Initial RAM filesystem and RAM disk (initramfs/initrd) support
-> SCSI device support
<*> RAID Transport Class
<*> SCSI device support
-> SCSI low-level drivers
-> Serial ATA (SATA) support
<*> Choose the RAID chipset of your choice
[*] Multiple devices driver support (RAID and LVM)
<*> RAID support
<*> Choose your RAID method (striping/mirroring/etc)
<*> Device mapper support
<*> (I marked everything under here, but only because I'm too lazy to troubleshoot)

I'm getting the same error message, but I'm not on any kind of raid system, just a single SATA disk. It's a via chipset, so how do I check if I compiled with all those options now that I can't boot the system? |

xoomix thank you: i haven't installed gentoo yet! that's simply what i get from booting with livecd after inserting gentoo dodmraid on startup. Before installing winxp I was able to startup livecd with gentoo dodmraid, infact i partitioned the array with gentoo.
In few words i can't install gentoo anymore. Intuitively it seems it wants to mount cd on windows partition or something like that. what can i do?

start with livecd or minimal and recompile kernel again. |

i've searched on google for an error message like that but it seems many people got it for very different reasons and no one with an installation cd. what should I do? renounce to gentoo? |
