i would not recommend using firefox3 from the mozilla overlay.... xulrunner in now in portage and firefox2 (the latest in portage) is basically the same as firefox3.... notice that you can go to local.live.com with firefox 2.0.0.1..... too many packages needed gecko =2 which is probably why they got rid of firefox3 ebuilds

How would I achieve backward compatability for all these programs depending on FF2's version of gecko?

Build Firefox without xulrunner and emerge xulrunner-1.8*.

vlc now requires =www-client/mozilla-firefox-2* to be installed because of the nsplugin useflag. I solved this by adding www-client/mozilla-firefox-2 to my /etc/portage/profile/package.provided. You could also install firefox with USE="-nsplugin" or with USE="seamonkey" to solve this problem. I don't know wether this is a bug or not so I won't file a bugreport.

Hi something wants to downgrade firefox to 2.0.0.12 version. It is not vlc I don't have it. If I do 'emerge -pv mozilla-firefox' everything seems fine, but when I run 'emerge -puvDN world' :

Ok, it is because of gnome-python-extras.

What? Acid2? FF3 does too.

Acid3 is interesting. 68 With FF3 beta4, 93 for Midori with WebKit r31114.
Konqueror3 only gets 41 here and almost crashes.

There's an ugly trick: install mozilla-firefox-2.0 and mozilla-firefox-bin-3.0alpha.

Or mozilla-firefox-2.* and Minefield (Firefox live), it is installed to /usr/lib/minefield, so won't interfere with firefox.

I finally put a modified ebuild of VLC into my overlay because having FF3 installed while FF2 being in package.provided made some problems. Why does VLC depend on FF2 but not on FF in general? does the plugin not work in FF3?

It does work in FF3, but doesn't compile against it. At least last time I checked. But that was just a test, as I use mplayerplug-in.
FF3 with -xulrunner + xulrunner-1.8* does the trick here. Almost anything that needs mozilla can be compiled against xulrunner too.
VLC too!

Ok, I'm compiling against xulrunner anyway. But I will be trying to compile apps that need xulrunner or FF against FF3.

Anyone tried to compile beta 4 on amd64? I have renamed the beta2 ebuild from mozilla overlay to beta 4, looks like everything compiles good, but there's many issues. The URL bar isn't working normally (I can enter URL and browse, but when I enter for example forums.gentoo.org, it stays forums.gentoo.org, not https://forums.gentoo.org, and when I open a new tab, it's blank, but URL is still forums.gentoo.org), forward/back buttons aren't working, bookmarks are empty, I can't add anything in it and so on. I tried deleting ~/.mozilla, but I still get same problems. I have official 32 bit binary too, it works great.
Ok, I've browsed the forum and found out that I needed to update sqlite. So I did that and w00t, everything runs great!

And the reason for using your own made beta4 ebuild and not the one in the overlay is...?

ah, VLC 0.8x can't be compiled against xulrunner, 0.9 alpha can be. I'm compiling it now without any issues about dependencies.

Yeah right, sorry. I'm using a live GIT ebuild, haven't used 0.8 for over a year already.

Because there was only beta 2 ebuild in the overlay when I checked out.

A layman -s mozilla or a svn up does wonders in those cases ;)

vlc-0.8.6e does compile against xulrunner! i just had to modify the ebuild. I used the 0.9 alpha ebuild and copied over the parts that involved Firefox or xulrunner. I will test VLC a little and then file a bug report.

It is strange, but it is a lot slower (in usage) than beta 3. Does anybody know how to fix it? I hope it is slower only on my desktop.
