Hi.

I just installed gentoo and everything worked ok.
However, when i reboot and try emerge xfree.
It works for a while and then stops with an error OR stops without an error.
Either way, it stops before its done and oviously doesnt work.
This seems to happen to all big compiles, but i managed to compile epic4, and also the kernel compile works just great when im installing.
I was thinking broken RAM stick, but would the kernel compile fine then ?
I got 2 512mb sticks.

It might well be bad RAM, the kernel is a smaller build than for instance XF86. And in any case, if it's bad RAM, your problems will be pretty random.

Why don't you test your RAM with for instance memtest86 (it's in portage).

Still no errors, 30 passes, i think its safe to say that the RAM is fine.
What else could it be ?
Any ideas ?

I had various random "Error 139" each time perl was manipulating the fonts and never got xfree 4.3 compiling. I was puzzled since I hae two "virtually" identical gentoo bozes and on the other it compiled flawlessly (running is another story).

Stumbling on this post, I tried testing my ram and it passed. But it made me suddenly remember about that DRAM ECC that I disabled in the bios (a very long time ago) and reenabled it.

Guess what... xfree compiled passed those perl "Error 139" (still is at this very moment). Try it, maybe it's a solution for you.
