Im running kernel-2.6.19-gentoo-r1 and for some reason it takes me 40 seconds to boot, and every program is really slow after i bootup, but it speeds up after ive been using the system for a short while. And when i say every program i mean everything, portage takes forever to do stuff right after boot, and it takes longer for gnome to load, even when im booting into GDM it takes longer. It takes longer for the menu to show up when i click applications in the gnome menu. It seems like the load times of everything are tremendously increased, like it shouldnt be increased this much just after boot. Any help would be appreciated!

Code:
           alsasound | boot
            bootmisc | boot
             checkfs | boot
           checkroot | boot
               clock | boot
         consolefont | boot
               cupsd |      default
                dbus |      default
                hald |      default
            hostname | boot
             hotplug |      default
               hplip |      default
             keymaps | boot
               local |      default nonetwork
          localmount | boot
             modules | boot
            net.eth1 |      default
              net.lo | boot
            netmount |      default
           rmnologin | boot
             urandom | boot
                 xdm |      default

my make.conf:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=k8 -fomit-frame-pointer -msse3 -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

this is all i have starting at bootup. is this support to be 40 seconds long? :?

Chances are it is a config problem in your new kernel, specifically the DMA chipset stuff for disk. How did you configure the new kernel? Did you just copy the old .config from older kernel? From what version kernel did you upgrade?

Ill look into the DMA thing.
Im using kernel 2.6.19 my previous kernel was 2.6.18, and i didnt copy the config and manually set everything for 2.6.19 in make menuconfig for the upgrade[/glep]

I just changed profile from 2006.0 to 2006.1 (Desktop), ran an emerge -ND world, and now it's much slower on boot, specifically the bit where the screen blanks after the message "Launching kdm" to the login screen actually appearing.

Running AMD64 on kernel 2.6.17-gentoo-r8.

Can't say I've noticed anything slower after login though.

I also noticed the same exact phenomenon on a new installation, on a new PC I've just built. Same profile and kernel.

I have a very similar problem here and I don't know what triggered it. Switching kernels from 2.6.17 to 2.6.18 didn't change things.

With me, the slow boot happens about 25% of the time, and slow desktop 50% of the time. It really is very very annoying and I have no idea what's causing it.
