Ok, after much trial and error, i've gotten the sound to work in my system, but, here's where the problems are
volume goes back to zero - *not really worried about this one, more of an annoyance*
can only play sound as root - *this is important, although i have no problem suing into root, i can't give all my users su priv's, and i sure don't want to put a suid wrapper around my apps as thats a security hole and a half*
my sound card is a SiS SI7012 using the Realtek ALC203 chipset rev 0
if anyone knows a solution to my problem, please let me know. if i find the answer on my own, i'll let you all know

If it works for root, but not your user, then it most likely is a permissions issue. Make sure that your user is a member of the audio group. Use "id username" to see group memberships and "gpasswd -a user audio" to add a user to the audio group. Changes to group membership won't take effect until that user logs out and back in. _________________
