Does anyone know how to stop grub from looking for a floppy drive on boot before it starts reading the menu.lst?
I don't have a floppy drive in my new system, and everytime it gets to loading grub it takes like 20-30 seconds to get past the floppy search.

I know the --no-floppy parameter works for grub at the command-line, but I can't for the life of me find anything in the docs about a menu.lst keyword.

edit: I've tried "hide (fd0)" and "hide (fd1)" but that doesn't work.
I don't have a floppy controller enabled on the board, either.

I have floppy seek at boot disabled in my BIOS.... I haven't noticed GRUB looking for it.
I wonder if it is a problem with the version of GRUB you are using.

I have everything floppy related disabled in the bios, also. (floppy search, floppy bus)
You really won't notice grub looking for it if you have a floppy installed. But, try taking it off or unplugging it, and grub goes bananas. It isn't anything dealing with the bios floppy search, I've had that disabled in every bios since my old 386. This is purely a Grub thing.
I'm using like the latest grub that's available with Gentoo, which is 0.90.

just for giggles I tried the keyword no-floppy in the menu.lst, but it didn't work :)

I've never had a floppy drive in this Gentoo/grub box and never had any booting delays...

I do however have floppy disk support in my kernel, if that can make any difference.

Now that is odd...
I had the same issue in a VMWare session with grub. when I turned off the floppy on the vmware session and tried booting, it did the same thing. Turn it back on, and it would go through the stage 1.5 and so forth with no delays.

Considering the kernel isn't loaded when grub is coming into play, I don't think the kernel nomenclature has anything to do with it....
Do you have anything in your menu.lst file that is odd, or could make grub not look for a floppy?
grub looks for a floppy to load any of the stages off of floppy. I found that out from the info file.

I didn't figure it was a BIOS issue. Very odd indeed. At least I'll know the problem exists
when I build a new machine without floppy (rarely use the one I have now).

I'm bouncing this again because I still have the same issue, and I'm hoping someone new might have ran into this and fixed it without a thought or something.

I've deleted the device.map file and remade it with grub, and still the same thing. (didn't think it'd work, but worth a shot)

pretty much when grub first comes onto the screen after bios, it hangs for 10-20 seconds, then drops to loading stage 1.5, hangs for another 10-20 seconds, then finally gets to the splash screen. Oddest part is, I've even put a floppy drive in to try to fix it and that didn't do anything! I use the floppy drive in Linux after it boots, also :)

I've installed Lilo and then re-installed grub, and the same thing... I couldn't get lilo to work correctly with my setup for some strange reason though. (it wouldn't load the LVM stuff right) I love grub, and would like to fix this...

Meaning the delays still occur, or the delays disappear?

have you re-installed with a floppy drive attached from the begining?

Looking through the Grub manual, it appears that 'no-floppy' is not a valid menu command (just grub shell). Also, this suggests it shouldn't have anything to do with the kernel (as you already surmised):
Quote:
Boot Sequence

The first sector of the first hard disk in a system has, in addition to the partition table, executable code that is the first stage of the boot process or the IPL (initial program load) code. The standard code is what's created when the DOS "fdisk /mbr" command is executed. When the BIOS settings are such that the hard disk is set to boot (or the hard disk comes after the floppy but no floppy disk is in the drive), the BIOS passes control to the IPL or first stage code. The standard code loads, determines which is the active partition and passes control to executable code in or near the first sector of the active partition. What happens next will depend on the operating system. With the older DOSs the actual executable core of the OS was located at the very beginning of the disk and loaded directly from the first stage loader. More typically a second stage boot program will load that in turn knows where to find the kernel or core components of the OS and then start them.
Found here.

Well if you mean the entire Operating system, hell no lol. I'm not about to reinstall gentoo again unless I have to.
Now I have uninstalled grub (unmerge), emerged lilo and tried setting that up, but it didn't seem too friendly with LVM. At least with my tries. (shouldn't have mattered about LVM, but it acted wierd)

I then re-emerged grub and went into grub and ran "root (hd0,1) setup (hd0)". obviously not on the same line but you know.
I know that re-sets the boot record and everything, and unmerging removes the binaries. that should be enough to thwart off any problems there, right?

Same thing on my system. I don't know why, but when I power on my computer with the keyboard (using spacebar or the ctrl-power keys) the delays simply dissapear!!! 8O (the delays come again only when I power on with the power button on the comp's case).

Strange thing! :?

Wow.. now that is different. Sounds like a acpi/softboot hardboot thing. (grub shouldn't care between the two though at all)

Mine happens all the time, whether I use the keyboard to kick it off, or the power button. Thing that bothers me is that I installed this the same way as I did my other system, and it starts up all dandy :D (other system is a celeron 300 overclocked to 450 on a 10GB harddrive, this system is a P4-1.8Ghz with a 120GB harddrive)

ctrl-power key? Your keyboard has a power key? Are you running a Sun? :)
Maybe I should bring this to the grub peoples attention.

No, is not a Sun :( . It's only a ps/2 keyboard I have that has power/sleep/wakeup keys. (keyboard: acer 6312-TA 4s/s from Darfon Electronics Corp). I could set the bios to use this key so later discovered than usig this key, the grub delays went off. 8O

If it helps my system is an Athlon XP 1800, with an Asus A7V333 mobo running kernel 2.4.19-gentoo-r7. Using only ext3 fs form my boot and root partitions. No ACPI support compiled (only APM).

Now, that sounds interesting. I used grub FLOPPY and it works quite dandy. :D

Do you mind to post how you set up Grub and the menu.lst. Probably we won't find anything wrong with it. But at least we can base on something concrete to discuss? To be sure that it may be one of grub's bugs., considering it's still alpha stage.

This is my menu.lst:
Code:

root@tonilnx toni # cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
default 0
timeout 3
splashimage (hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Linux Gentoo NO ACPI,ALSA (Kernel 2.4.19r7 V4 -Athlon XP 1800)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage-2.4.19-gentoo-r7-4 ide=reverse root=/dev/hda2 hdd=ide-scsi

I use the ide=reverse because I have a PCI HPT 370 ide controller card and I want to ensure that the onboard ide controllers (VIA) load first as ide0/1, instead of ide2/3. otherwise my root part hda2 becomes hde2 and I get a kernel panic "unable to mount root partition". I figure that kernel tries to load HTP 370 first because it has some sort of soft RAID capabilities (just guessing! :roll: )

I have an 80Gb Seagate ATA100 as hda, a Fujitsu 15GB ATA66 as hdc, a Plextor CDRW as hdd, and on the PCI card controller an LG DVD and an IDE zip drive (hde/hdf). I have also a floppy but I have it disabled from the BIOS boot sequence.

For the grub install I did exactly what the install doc says:
Code:

grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

Hope it helps!

and here's my menu.lst:
Code:

default 1
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash1.xpm.gz

title=Win2k
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

title=Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage-2.4.19 idebus=66 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd=/boot/initrd-lvm-2.4.19.gz

title=Failsafe Gentoo
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage-orig idebus=66 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd=/boot/initrd-lvm-2.4.18-orig.gz

title=Memtest86 Stress Test
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/memtest86/memtest.bin

I setup grub like so:
Code:

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)
quit

Mainly boilerplate, except for the drive/partition designation.
I have a Western Digital 120Gigger that is divided into 4 physical partitions.
hda1 = Windows
hda2 = /boot
hda3 = swap
hda4 = LVM partition (divided into 6 system partitions within LVM.. but thats outside of this scope)

I only have 2 drives in this system, hda is my Western Digital, hdc is an Acer 8x4x32 CDRW.

EDIT: I also have a floppy drive installed.

What might be more telling is to compare /usr/src/linux/.config files.

for a Grub problem?

I fail to see how a kernel configuration problem could cause issues with Grubs initialization before the kernel is initialized at all.

Mind you I'm working on trying to get my IDE drive to emulate properly as SCSI right now, so you might see some descrepencies in that department. (It stopped working all of a sudden while I was experimenting with options)

I looked at both posts( on setup and menu.lst ) and didnt find any apparent error. Since the either circumstances are different from mine( I also do multiboot 6 OSes ), I can't say definitely. It could be a bug in grub. My experience with grub has been grub sometimes may behave strangely and required some work around but most of the time fixable. :)

for a Grub problem?

I fail to see how a kernel configuration problem could cause issues with Grubs initialization before the kernel is initialized at all.
Yeah, you're correct, I keep forgetting that part. I just don't see how your average menu.lst could be the issue. Assuming I haven't missed it, has anyone tried mailing the Grub people?
