This could probably belong in one of the chat sub forums, but here it is.

So after seeing the hype of beryl on a video demo or two, and patiently waiting for it's grand entrance into the portage tree.
I was feeling adventurous and I felt like breaking stuff, so I installed beryl-0.1.3.
I updated http://gentoo-wiki.com/Beryl to reflect what is now in the tree.

WOW, it's nice, and dizzying. Motion Sickness quite possibly even while dragging a window.
I got it working with my laptop nvidia chip with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776

It doesn't eat up much CPU, I honestly thought it would have been a hog.
I don't have beryl setup fully, as I am running it manually ATM.

If you haven't already tried out beryl, give it a go.
[edit]spelling errors.
[edit]changed title to something more suitable
[edit] changed to solved. thanks downey.

Works great even with onboard intel i810/945 chipsets.

How do others make their launch bars similar to XP/Vista?

What's the Vista Launch bar look like?
I really haven't seen Vista, every attempt I made to test the beta failed for me.

As far as the theming there is countless ways to customize the visuals in Gnome, and now I would assume beryl too.

got any log files? I can't read your mind, so I can't find out the problem without more info, you know.

could you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and what ls /var/log says?

the easiest way to get the contents of files is to cat them, so you can just cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log and copy it here, and same thing for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

bunkacid, you are using non TFP-Beryl and start it manually for now, I am right? So hosing up the system isn't that easy?
Gonna try it too if that should be the case.

Bye, Val.

Wow, thanks guys. At first I did not expect my post about something cool turning into a cry for help. :)
Well, I was using beryl manually at first, then I got the idea to run it automatically. I changed it back to the regular gnome when I couldn't open anything up. This didn't fix the issue. I even created a new user, and the brand new user had the same issue. I've since reinstalled all the gnome related packages, and completely cleared out my profile.

Here is some of the stuff asked of me.
@sonichboc, I'll post the rest in separate posts.

@Tlaloc
As it turns out, I didn't think to see if I was doing the Non-TFP method.
I do have the package x11-libs/libwnck-2.16.2 installed, which is a dependancy of a few things.
Code:

$ equery depends libwnck
[ Searching for packages depending on libwnck... ]
x11-misc/notification-daemon-0.3.6-r1
gnome-base/gnome-panel-2.16.2
gnome-base/gnome-applets-2.16.2
gnome-base/gnome-light-2.16.1
gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.16.2
gnome-extra/gnome-system-monitor-2.16.1
dev-python/gnome-python-desktop-2.16.0

I guess I need to remove libwnck before compiling beryl?

Since I removed beryl, I have to re-emerge it.
Code:
$ emerge -tav beryl

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

OK, now when I start beryl-manager manually, the screen gets whited out. Using ALT-TAB brings up the window change, but everything else is whited out.

Going to restart X. and then post the Xorg.0.log

I just noticed in the log, the failed GLX part.

Code:

px@pmobilex /etc/X11 $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia
  [2]   xorg-x11 *
px@pmobilex /etc/X11 $ eselect opengl set 1
Switching to nvidia OpenGL interface... done
px@pmobilex /etc/X11 $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia *
  [2]   xorg-x11

fixed, now going to restart again.

You were saying you were having a problem with opening files right? You double click on a file on your desktop and it fails to display? Also you likely can't modify your Beryl setup or change your emerald theme. That really has nothing to do with Beryl. There is a bug in glib which is now fixed which causes all file MIME types not to be registered properly. If you update to the latest glib this should fix your problem. I checked now and they've released a newer version again. You need to have glib-2.12.5-r1 or better, 2.12.5 had the problem which is now removed from portage. 2.12.6 is now available so it may work as well.

Yeah, I am unable to doubleclick and open files from the desktop or from nautilus.
Changes made in Beryl Settings manager/emerald also do not stick.

Ah yes, I have glib-1.2.10-r5 and glib-2.12.5 installed. I will update to glib-2.12.5-1 or better once I see it's made it's way into the tree today.

Thanks!

If you are running Gnome just go to your settings -> session and add in beryl-manager to the list of things that are autostarted. The beryl guide shows you how to manual edit the Gnome startup file but it's far easier to use the session tool. The only thing I find is that you need to turn off the splash screen if you want to run gdesklets on start up. For some reason gdesklets fail to start if beryl is still in startup mode.
