xscreensaver sometimes doesn't turn off the monitor

Hi.
After upgrading kernel (to 2.6.18 from ... can't remember) and gnome (2.14->2.16) I have problems with xscreensaver: it starts the screensaver correctly after the specificied time, but often (not always) fails to turn off the monitor after the specified time....
Btw, I don't have gnome-screensaver installed, and gnome-power-manager is prevented from running .....
