Do I need to install a special package to get the man pages for simple Linux commands like rm, ln? I don't seem to have them.

OK, I saw that, but just to confirm, those man pages are not installed as part of the base layout?
Also, will that install a bunch of man pages for applications that are not installed on my system?

sys-apps/man-pages are in 'system' in the default-linux, selinux and uclibc profiles.
