Yesterday I got my new computer. It's a Core 2 Duo E6600 with an Asus P5B motherboard and PC-8500 DDR2 memory.
I used KernelOfTruth's amd64 Live-CD that deals with the JMicron issues on the P5B motherboard.

The kernel I have is mm-sources-2.6.19_rc4-r1, and I used that because of the JMicron issues that 2.6.18 has.

I get the following error message:

Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 00.
Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 3c
Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.

And there it stops. I can't get passed that error message and i don't have any idea what I should do.

I tried to disable APIC and ACPI, as suggested in two other threads and on #gentoo @ freenode, but with no success.
I also tested the memory for errors with memtest86 but there was none.

So, what causes this and what can I do to get my system up and running again?

Hello!

I had the same problem with my E6600.. Just make sure the "Old style AMD Opteron NUMA Detection" and "K8 GART IOMMU support" is removed and it should work fine :)

Same problem, same cpu and motherboard.

I cannot find the "K8 GART IOMMU support" entry, but found a "IOMMU" entry in its stead. I disabled that one as well, but it doesn't fix the error I get on bootup.

Using the same config on the latest ck-sources does work, but fails to find sda (due to the JMicron thing I assume).

[edit]
Of course the first thing I try after posting this works :: I removed Processor and Thermal Zone from ACPI and that seemed to have done the trick. Either that, or some bug got fixed between mm-sources-2.6.19_rc4-r1 and -r2.
