I'm expecting my new Opteron 175 to get here tomorrow, and I currently have a Athlon64 3200 Venice, I was looking around so I know what to expect and get my system all prepared. I saw that there is a separate Opteron march, is there any benefit of switching the march? |

The "athlon64", "opteron", "k8", and "athlon-fx" march settings are identical (http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.1.1/gcc/i386-and-x86_002d64-Options.html#i386-and-x86_002d64-Options).
The only thing you might want to consider is -msse3 ("# grep pni /proc/cpuinfo"). |

you will want sse3 support, but remember it's fpu so it probably isn't worth remerging sytem for it. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

try adding sse3 to your use flags too, and the do "emerge --newuse --pretend" to see whether anyhing important uses that use flag and might benefit from it being enabled. If it uses the sse3 use flag, it's a good bet it's a good choice in package to remerge if you want to take advantage of things.
opterons are awesome ; ) i hope yours has a meg of cache, becasue if it does, you're gonna be happy. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

Even without SSE3 use flag enabled, I still have ~400 packages, I've been putting off a world update until I get my new processor. So I'll add that flag and update when I get it. I did get one of the 1mb l2 cache ones too. Anyway, thanks for all the help . |
