Hello everybody!

Recently I webrsynced my portage tree and updated some software, and since then i can hear no sound anymore. The problem is that my box "thinks" that everything works fine, so I have no clue where to look for the problem.
The aRts mixer says that Master and PCM volume are 100% and not mute. However, I can't hear anything...

The kernel did not change (well, I've tested sound on the new kernel as well)
My first suspiction was that udev changed something... after editing /etc/conf.d/rc i revoke this

I have a SiS7012 sound card and loaded these modules:
Code:
snd_intel8x0m          13324  0
snd_intel8x0           27548  1
snd_ac97_codec         88096  2 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus            1920  1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm                69896  3 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer              18052  1 snd_pcm
snd                    41572  7 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc          7688  3 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

lspci says
Code:
00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)
Subsystem: Uniwill Computer Corp Unknown device 5203
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
        I/O ports at dc00 [size=256]
        I/O ports at d800 [size=128]
Capabilities: [48] Power Management version 2

The first emerges were: portage and gcc.

here some log parts (I took the --fetchonly part because they are shorter)
If you can find a package which could have caused the sound not to work, please tell me!

thank you very much
-chris

kmix works. I can turn the microphone on and off.
PCM and Master are set to maximum volume...

Maybe the output is just muted. Try
Code:

alsamixer

And make sure your output is unmuted and your volume is raised. By the way: which sound card is it?

I think it does not matter which mixer you use - if you change volumes on alsamixer, kmix will take the settings over... and currently nothing is muted.
btw, where do I find alsamixer? since alsa is shipped with the kernel, this program is gone. (is it in alsa-drivers?)

sound output via sox (the 'play' command) does work.

my sound card is SiS7013, and i have snd_intel8x0 loaded (or 8?0_audio when using OSS...)

you need alsa-utils try re-emerging it and then running alsamixer

Correct.

media-sound/alsa-utils

There is no need for arts, disable the sound server in kcontrol, go to the advanced properties button or whatever it was called in the sound events config and there you can choose an external player. Any command line tool will do, for example, "play". You don't need arts for anything. All the kde programs can use alsa directly, and alsa can do software mixing with dmix if your sound card does not support hardware mixing.

It is a superfluous, crappy, useless piece of software that only gives problems.

So how do you tell noatun or juk to not use arts??? (xmms is gone...)

The problem is not solved completely yer... Before I want to use sound I have to reload the ALSA modules.
Strangely enough, if I remove /etc/init.d/alsasound and /etc/init.d/coldplug from all bootlevels, and clean /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, even then the ALSA modules are loaded, apparently before init is executed, but without working correctly then!?!

have you read the issues section of the alsa-guide?

You cant. I personally would use any other thing that can handle alsa directly. Kaboodle is also one of those few crappy things that can't do without arts. There is a crapton of players around, if you want kde ones, just use kaffeine, kmplayer, amarok, codeine, kplayer... it is not like there aren't options :P You can always use audacious if you like buggy xmms clones, or any other gtk player as well.

When those strange things happen, do you see anything related to those drivers on dmesg?

I looked in /var/log/dmesg, and it contains a single line indicating "successful" loading of i8x0. I do not have the laptop with me now...
in dmesg or /var/log/messages, there's no more than in /var/log/dmesg.

I 'solved' the problem by writing an init script which unloads and reloads the modules...
