doesnt seem to matter what settings i change in xorg.conf I cannot get my two LCDS to display at 60hz instead of 75hz (i want to do this because i believe its related to my tearing problem with videos)
using ati bigdesktop with e17

You need to use the emergency manual override, if fglrx provides it.
First, write yourself some mode lines be careful to choose names that do not clash with the build in modes.
Add Option somewhere in your Device Section for the fglra driver.
Lastly, as you should have full manual control now, you must ensure that you have correct VertRefresh and HorzSync in your Display Sections. With LCDs you don't get the display damage you can with some CRTs, when there numbers are wrong.
You may find the right numbers in /var/log/Xor.0.log before you disable the EDID.

Not sure about this but maybe you should give it a try.
Your current settings are: | Code: | | VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 |
These are most likely the values you entered provided by the manufacturer. Change them to e.g. | Code: | | VertRefresh 56.0 - 60.0 |
You should only modify xorg.conf if you are familiar with editing text files on your console (just in case X does not start up again after the above).

ok i got one screen to come out to 60hz (YAY!) but wait....i still have video tearing =( |

| I still repeat myself again : YOU DO NOT NEED EITHER VertRefreh or HorizSync (what stupid illogical naming anyway) but you still might need a modeline (though 1280x1024 is a standard rez), also you may want to specify the frequency with the rez (eg 1280x1024@60) though most LCD only have 50|60 Hz |

Many LCDs lie in the EDID data they provide, hence the use of the manual controls.
I agree its not needed provided you operate within the constraints of the provided EDID, it takes care of the many cases where the EDID is not correct.
