|
|
I have been trying with no luck to install Gentoo on my MDD Dual 867's SECONDARY hard drive.
I don't want to mess up my OSX installation, but rather i want the ability to boot off of the second the hard drive with Gentoo installed like i used to do with YDL. With YDL, i didn't even install a boot loader on the MBR, i used open firmware to boot linux.
When i run "mac-fdisk -l" it only lists the primary drive (hda). I can't seem to find the other drive at all. I partitioned the other drive with FREE SPACE using OSX Disk Utility.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. |

At the command line, type:
And post the results.
There's nothing that would prevent you from using Gentoo on a second drive, but we need to figure out why you can't see it. How is it attached? Are you sure you've loaded the proper driver? _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

ok, relief... i fixed it by zapping the pram.
Now, i try to boot into os x, it works fine... but i want to try Gentoo.
I drop into OF and type boot ata-6@d,boot\yaboot
something starts happening: the screen goes a shade darger, some text starts to come up in the bottom-left corner of the screen, then i get presented with a circle with a slash through it.
What does that mean? |

Can anyone tell me how to fix this yaboot issue (i think it is) through open firmware? Do i have to reinstall the whole thing again or is there a quick fix that i can do? |

First boot the liveCD:
Then mount your partition(s) (mount /dev/hdc /mnt/gentoo). Then chroot into /mnt/gentoo (chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash) and then don't forget to run env-update and source /etc/profile .
These steps are described in two different parts of the handbook (the first being in "Preparing the Disks" and the second being in "Installing the Gentoo Base System").[/code] |

ndansmith suggested that you use the LiveCD. You don't need to start yaboot to do this. Doing it this way is easier than trying to figure out what went wrong with your install and yaboot configuration.
Once you've booted into the LiveCD and chrooted in, it would be helpful if you could post your yaboot.conf, along with the disk layout you're using (mac-fdisk -l). _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |
