When I'm installing Gentoo using the 2006.0 Minimal install CD, all web pages will load just fine in links, the network all works fine, everything is fine.
After the install, after I first boot into my new Gentoo system, links will not load www.gentoo.org or most other websites. It does, on the other hand, load www.google.com just fine. I can make searches but I can't click on links from them.

When I try to tracepath www.gentoo.org on my Windows machine, it works just fine, but from any Gentoo machine, it will not work starting at the very last hop (the would-be gentoo server).

This same behavior occurs when I use lynx.
I'd like to add that this obviously is a major problem, as emerging x, gnome, or ati-drivers is impossible for me as they are downloaded from the xorg.freedesktop servers during the emerge process (as well as other packages).
In addition, my networking settings appear correct. My IP is correct, my subnet, broadcast address, my route, hostname, and DNS server are all there. My machine WILL resolve addresses.

I have no proxy server and all other machine on my network (that don't have gentoo installed) can use the internet just fine. I'm sure you will need more information from me, so just ask and I'll be happy to give you it to solve this weird problem. I've exhausted everyone's help on the IRC #gentoo channel and no one has been able to figure out the cause.

Edit: My friend on a different computer on my network has the exact same problem when using a 2006.1 Live CD.

I've had similar behavior with the later gentoo livecd's. I can still reach all websites but my connection is extremely slow over the internet (on a 3mb connection I only get 10-20KB/s downloads). My guess is ipv6 is causing the problem and unfortunately couldn't find any way to remove it. I was able to work around it by using a proxy server.

I've had this behavior on several different machines using 2006.0 and 2006.1 livecd's.

It sounds very likely that somewhere very near you there's a broken router which doesn't properly handle window scaling. It would also explain why your friend has experienced a similar problem. The technical stuff is can be found here. But, the simple solution is to try the following from a terminal:
Code:
# echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
The fix should be immediate and not require rebooting or anything. If that solves the problem you can try contacting your ISP to inform them of the issue, but it's unlikely that either of you will have any control over the problem router. Instead you just might want to add this line to your /etc/sysctl.conf:
Code:
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 0

HTH,
m

For me this is not the cause. The problem is only with the LiveCD. I have tcp_window_scaling on normally with no problems.

You're situation seems very different (slow internet vs. no resolving; proxy vs no proxy) so the solution probably wont apply.

If I understand your situation correctly, k3nny, you'll need to make sure your /etc/resolv.conf is set up correctly, that your firewall isn't blocking DNS requests/responses, and that you have working DNS servers. If you have to enter the numbers for a website rather than the words, then that's what's not working properly.
