No, there's no need for Gentoo branding in my applications. In any case, if it gets implemented, I prefer the feature to be on by default. |

well... if it is disabled per default, and you don't add branding to your use flags,you would not even know that such a thing exists.
if gentoo is all about choices, than why not letting you have the choice to use gentoo branding or not? |

Exactly! Hence : don't turn it on by default, just offer it as an option, a USE flag. |

I would love to see more branding. Too many people believe that Gentoo is just LFS with a package manager, but it really isn't. It is a theology. It is a mindset. Configurability. And the faster people realize they are all Gentoo users the better community will be. It gave me a nice feeling seeing the Gentoo SVG logo on Gnome when I first installed Gentoo(I admit I installed w/ the GUI but I am not a noob) and it gives the community more unity. Seeing that alone made me want to contribute.
Ok, hope I didn't tire anyone _________________ No Man is Just a Number!

Not quite so sure. Have a look at this topic : Will you ever use the Gentoo Installer?

It's a mental illness. Try Debian. |

You took my post out of context. I was talking about the gnome logo and said that it gave the community more unity. _________________ No Man is Just a Number!

Sorry about that. Didn't want to... I really thought you meant that the GUI Installer was uniting the community. I'll edit my post up there. Sorry again. |

This would actually be abuse of the vanilla flag and you only need the branding USE-flag anyway (vanilla USE flag disables patches on packages supporting it).
|
I agree with the quote above.
In any event, I
1-)would like branding
2-)would like it on by default
but
3-)think that other things are more important. In other words, if someone wants to create Gentoo artwork, nice, but if one is deciding between making artwork or cleaning up ebuilds, I would prefer him to clean up ebuilds. |

Gentoo is about choices, and I chose not to have any branding on my apps. I set USE="-branding" in /etc/make.conf just to be sure. But what did I get after updating to OpenOffice.org-2.3.0? A Gentoo splash screen!
A branding flag for openoffice-2.3.0 seems to be missing. I had a look at the ebuild and at the output of 'euse -i branding'.
So where's my choice? I had to find and edit a BMP file to get rid of this "SuSEish" behaviour. One reason for me to quit using SuSE was to get the "vanilla" look and feel of KDE and applications back. My machine displays a boot message telling the world clearly it is starting Gentoo Linux. That's sufficient for me and I would like to get my choice back. |

It seems that nobody has realized that gentoo-branding is enabled by default in openoffice in the last version. Why? The majority of people who has voted in this unofficial poll seems to agree that gentoo-branding should be off by default. What happened? _________________ I cannot write English very well. One of my favorite features of Gentoo is that it keeps Gnome, KDE, and XFCE as close to upstream as it can when it comes to icon themes and whatnot. |

Now, guess what? Branding is ON by default in Gentoo 2008. |

Code: |
equery h branding
[ Searching for USE flag branding in all categories among: ]
* installed packages
[I--] [ ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.9-r4 (3.5)
[I--] [ ] kde-base/konqueror-3.5.9 (3.5)
|
and the profile is:
/etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/x86/2008.0/desktop
is it something different?..
I've switched to the 2008 today and was trying to find out that flag is about. That's how I found this thread. |

Does it look any different? Do we have Gentoo icons in KDE now, or a Gentoo wallpaper by default? _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

This global flag appends "gentoo" keyword to browser's useragent string in KDE/Gnome (at least).
It's also adds Gentoo-{Bugzilla,Forum} search shortcuts to Konqueror (not sure about gnome).
It's not a big deal for today, I even like it, but it's still branding and it's on by default. |
