Battle for wesnoth use freetype 2.1 who has memory leaks

i had some memory leaks even without using the bindist use flag...
i upgraded to freetype 2.2.1 and the memory leaks are gone

Does someone know what does "stuff that depends on internals" mean? I mean, I would like to know what programs might break if I upgrade that library.
