Hello,
When first installing using the LiveCD, I've come across some failed installations where the system would hang, prompting me to mash the reset button on my PC. I've finally got Gentoo installed, though I just need to tweak a few things to get X started since I have an ATI card (I already know the answer to this). However here's my problem: I dual boot, so when I try booting back to XP, in the device manager I find that my USB drivers are corrupted or missing, here's what exactly:
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D4
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D7
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24DE
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD
And for these entries I get "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
Now I know this is more Windows related than anything else, however I feel that it may have been because of my failed installations with gentoo. I use external HDs, and I remember that they were still plugged during my first run with Gentoo. May I get your input please? I tried uninstalling these drivers, then reinstalling them from my mobo's manufacturer. That doesn't seem to help, just same message. Is it something I gotta go through gentoo? |

Did you resize the windows partition? You could have moved back past some important files at the very end.

Nopes. Never touched the Windows partition. I had already made a partition just for Linux a while back using PartitionMagic in Windows, and the ports were working fine. |

myles,
What happens if you power cycle when you switch from Gentoo to Windows and not soft reboot?
Some chipsets have a strange deep sleep mode that means a OS switch fails unless the power goes off.
I've not seen it with USB but there is no reason why it should not exist _________________ Regards,

When I power cycle, I get the same problem unfortunately. I forgot to mention that I have other things in the device manager that have become kaput. I see entries like Totalidea Ramdisk, and Multimedia Audio Controller. Not sure if that helps any. |

myles,
The power cycle proves its nothing that Gentoo is doing.
When you power on and boot, the hardware starts in the same state for any OS.
Your windows install is broken _________________ Regards,
