Hello,
this is another problem related to Quake 3. (I have edited it in so far, as the errormessage has changed a bit).

I have installed Quake 3 via Portage:

  • games-fps/quake3
    Installed: 1.34_rc2 (with +opengl Use-Flag)
  • games-fps/quake3-data
    Installed: 1.32b
  • x11-drivers/ati-drivers (with +opengl Use-Flag)
    Installed: 8.30.3-r1

When I try to run it with xterm (/usr/games/bin/quake3) i get the following error, I also tried running it as root with the same error:
Code:
...
...
----- finished R_Init -----
------ Initializing Sound ------
Initializing SDL audio driver...
SDL audio driver is "dsp".
SDL_AudioSpec:
  Format:   AUDIO_S16LSB
  Freq:     22050
  Samples:  512
  Channels: 2
Starting SDL audio callback...
SDL audio initialized.
----- Sound Info -----

I have got an old installation of Quake 3 on another partition which is running properly:
Code:
...
...
----- finished R_Init -----

------- sound initialization -------
------------------------------------
----- Sound Info -----
sound system is muted
    1 stereo
32768 samples
   16 samplebits

No background file.

Loading vm file vm/ui.qvm.
VM file ui compiled to 594408 bytes of code
ui loaded in 1963008 bytes on the hunk

I run XDM with KDE.
Glxgears runs properly with around 100 FPS.
Fglrxinfo shows the following:
Code:
[lukas@lukas] ~ $ /opt/ati/bin/fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY RADEON X600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6119 (8.30.3)

One might say, I could just run the old installation but I am interested what is wrong with it. I guess it has something to do with sdl-sound. I use alsa, not arts:

  • media-libs/alsa-lib
    Installed: 1.0.13
  • media-libs/alsa-oss
    Installed: 1.0.12
  • media-sound/alsa-headers
    Installed: 1.0.13
  • media-sound/alsa-utils
    Installed: 1.0.13

Sorry, but I am used to get a few answers in a couple of days. Thus there is no answer right now I guess my discription of the problem is somehow nonsatisfying. Please tell me whats wrong?

Compare the configuration between the two partitions: Probably ~/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg

Die Konfiguration unterscheidet sich nicht großartig:
Code:
/dev/hda6   /         ext3   defaults,noatime,user_xattr,errors=remount-ro   0   2
/dev/hda7   /mnt/hda7    ext3   defaults,user_xattr            0   2
[/code]

I meant the Quake 3 configuration file: ~/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg

Ah right, both installations use the same configuration. Both use /home/lukas/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg

try quake3-bin, which is the official quake3 straight from id. the quake3 package is ioquake3, which is nice and all, but doesn't work with punkbuster and probably has some other issues.

"quake3-bin" is working well. But I am always confused about the placement of the files. "quake3" installs to /usr/games/bin and "quake3-bin" installs to /opt/quake3. But "ati-drivers" installs itself to /opt/ati... Everything beneath /usr/ and /opt/ continues being confusing to me.

Look at the ebuilds for quake3 & quake3-bin, and /usr/portage/eclass/games-mods.eclass - it's symlink city, with the purpose of having ${GAMES_DATADIR} (i.e. /usr/share/games) be preferred over /opt.
