I cannot run java applets or flash animations inside the firefox browser.
I get "click here to download plugin" message indicating that firefox does not know about the presence of the plugin.
I have JAVA installed on my system. I also have netscape-flash installed on my system.
I'm using 64-bit Gentoo.

I searched the forum and found several threads discussing these issues but I cannot get JAVA and flash to run inside my browser.
What should I do to make sure that JAVA applets run inside firefox.
Thanks |

On 64 bit, nsplugin is not available.
Code: |
valkyrite ~ # emerge -pv sun-jdk
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It says to emerge netscape-flash.
I have already emerged it (I remerged version 7).
But I cannot get flash to run.
Firefox probably needs to know where to look for "libflashplayer.so"
It is presently installed in "/opt/netscape/plugins"
How can I make firefox know the location of the plugin? |

Hi,
Flash only works with mozilla-firefox-bin (32 bit) and you are using mozilla-firefox (compiled for your 64bit amd)...
You need to emerge mozilla-firefox-bin (and maybe re-emerge netscape flash to get right symlinks to be made) and use this one if you have flash content to view.
All plugins for mozilla-firefox are in /usr/lib64/nsbrowser/plugins and all plugins for mozilla-firefox-bin are in /usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins, but all should be right if you re-emerge plugins after both firefox and firefox-bin are emerged.
The bad side of this is that all plugins you will compile yourself in 64bit (i mean, not provided as 32bit binaries, vlc for example) will only work with your mozilla-firefox and not on mozilla-firefox-bin.
Please all amd64 users, pray for Adobe provides 64bit version of final linux flash 9 |

I reemerged eveerything twice (still no luck).
I have emerged mozilla-firefox-bin (default).
How can I emerge a 32 bit version of firefox.
I have the files "libflashplayer.so" and "flashplayer.xpt" in /usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins.
The directory /usr/lib64/nsbrowser/plugins is empty.
And therefore I feel that 32 bit version of the flash player is installed on my machine.
What should I do to get 32 bit version of the browser?
Thanks |

Have you emerged nspluginwrapper?
For flash, try emerging in the order mentioned in this post https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-529965-highlight-amd64+flash.html - restarting firefox picked up the plugin. I agree with kamikaze's post in the thread mentioned but, for the moment this works.
Surely 64bit plugins are on their way? |

Thanks, I got the flash working (with sound).
Now Java applet remains. What should I do about that? |
