If I wanted to replace a running postfix box, what procedure would you suggest? My only concern is that if I down the existing server, it will still have messages on the queue. When the postfix service is down, can I still flush the queue?
Thanks!

1.1.1.1 - your external ip (ext1)
2.2.2.2 - your external ip (old postfix) (int1)
3.3.3.3 - your external ip (new machine) (int2)
both machines started, int1 is listening on port 25
use your filewall and nat port 25 to int2 (which was previously nated to int1)
wait until int1 has processed all the mails in it´s queue, than you should be able to shut it down
because you have nated port 25 to int2 all new mails that are coming in will be processed by the new mailserver
the old mailserver will still have the right to send mails to the outside, until it´s queue is empty and you shut it down |
