|

Okay, so I decided to try something new on my latest server build. Instead of ext3 on the root filesystem, I wanted to try out ReiserFS. Everything else was standard, but that was the only thing I've done any different than the handful of other Gentoo systems I've built.
My /etc/fstab:
Code: | /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda3 / reiserfs noatime 0 1
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user 0 0
|
My grub.conf:
Code: | default 0
timeout 10
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.18-r6
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.18-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/hda3
|
The system pops up the grub boot window just fine, starts to load, but then spits out the following error message before a kernel panic:
Code: | Cannot open root device "hda3" or unknown-block(0,0) |
Any ideas? I made absolutely sure that the Reiser filesystem was supported by the kernel I compiled...

Just of giggles,
Did you compile support for your ata/sata? (Perhaps it was accidently disabled?) |

Hmmm... Suppose that's actually a possibility. I stepped through the menuconfig again for the kernel. I tweaked and tuned a bit, but didn't find anything that stood out. Regardless, I rebuilt the kernel and it's working.
Odd, but thanks for the push in the right direction. |
