SOLVED: Running GUI programs remotely on OSX

Ok, here's the situation-

I'm trying to run a few programs I need a GUI for remotely on a mac (ssh'ing into Gentoo machine from OSX). I have set the DISPLAY variable to my local IP address (ipaddress:0.0), but programs still just hang and nothing shows up on the mac.

Any ideas on what else to look into?

When setting your address to '0.0', what do you mean? Shouldn't you be setting it to localhost (by tradition 127.0.0.1)?

Can you get text programs to run through ssh?

Also, I believe it is much easier if you run the X11 terminal instead of the standard OSX one, and have the X11 terminal and mac terminal always in my dock for this reason. You might not have the X11 terminal installed and properly configured, in which case you should do that first.

i fixed it!... i was using X11, but i guess ssh sets the a lot of the x-specific variables for you. here's what i did to get the thing working:

first, change a few lines in the /etc/ssh_config file- uncomment or add:

ForwardAgent yes
ForwardX11 yes

next, use the -Y flag (with OSX 10.4.x, or -X with previous) with ssh:
