After dealing with some recent disk space issues, I installed a second hard drive in my linux box, so that I could dedicate one to /usr files. In the process, I made the old spare drive my master (hda) and so I wiped the system and reinstalled.

During the installation process, I experienced a frozen console window a couple of times. I simply change to another console (Alt-F-whatever) and went about my business. Perhaps I was under the impression it would work itself out.

Now I have KDE installed, and I fired off an emerge of a couple of programs this morning and headed to work. When I returned home, the Konsole window was frozen. Now, I should be clear in that KDE itself was not frozen, and I could simply close the dead Konsole window and open a new one to resume what I was doing. Additionally, it doesn't appear to happen when the console (or, if in KDE, Konsole) window is actually doing anything (like displaying an emerge) but then again, it only happens about once a day or so, and it's therefore possible that just by luck of the draw, it happened to be after the completion of an emerge.

I should also point out that this system should be very similar to the previous instance, which never had this problem. I used a backed-up copy of my kernel config when I built the kernel, and I've used copies of all my previous config files to duplicate settings such as those for KDE.

I'm kind of at a loss here, because part of me says that wiping the drives again my eliminate whatever this mystery problem is, but I'm on a 850-mHz machine and don't really want to watch another 24-30 hours go by installing KDE if that's not likely to remedy the problem. On the other hand, the only things I typically leave running on my linux machine is an Eterm window that scrolls log files and an idle Eterm window. If they both experience daily freezes, things will get tiring quickly.

If anyone has experienced this sort of problem in the past and found a solution, I'd be very interested in trying it myself.

Regards,
Sebatical
