Last week I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.19-gentoo-r2 because only the latest ivtv was working for me. Everything was working great except dvd writing. It would solidly lock the computer on most of the dvd's I tried to write. SSH wouldn't even work anymore. I finally decided it was a kernel problem and went back to 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 and now dvd writing is fine again, but sound does not work. mpg321 locks without explanation, and kill -9 won't touch it. alsaconf ends up trying to do a fsck on my disks, presumably because I am using einit, and alsaconf has init stuff hard coded in.. What happens when init can't remount ro? "give root password for maint, or type ctrl-D now" either of which crash the computer of course. So this is what I get for using beta software. So many bugs and no time to bug 'em. Should I pursue this kernel writing problem (bug?) and try to help out by ruining 10 more dvd's???  I have searched for simular problems but can't seem to find any.

I would recommend sticking with the kernel that burns dvds, then use alsa-driver modules so you can work on it separate of the running kernel. I have found sound problems easier to diagnose.
If you don't, I would recommend using dvd-rw's so you don't waste dvds.
My tips for diagnosing sound, rebuild alsa-headers alsa-driver alsa-lib alsa-utils
remove don't auto start kde/xdm/X windows
and start with speaker-test...this sets the dividing line for where to look....if speaker-test fails, the problem lies lower down, if it succeeds, try making a new user to test your windowing environment with alsa as I have had /home/user/.* settings files break my sound twice...

Still having major problems. Under the stable kernel (2.6.18-r6) alsa segfaults, konqueror will not run, and other strange stuff. I just installed 2.6.19-r4 and it seemed to work perfectly, until the second DVD write, and it completely locked up, with the caps lock and scroll lock LED's flashing and the hard drive light stuck on. Now on the second reboot 2.6.19-r4 will not load alsa or nvidia. What is happening?

Here's my emerge --info if that helps. I have had those cflags since day one, and the whole system has been rebuilt twice with whats his name's fancy rebuild script. It is about 6 months old, and only recently started having this problem. Thanks for any help!
