I've gotten through the install on my Toshiba laptop without difficulty, but my new kernel won't boot. I've rebuilt the kernel with various options, but have been unsuccessful getting past the "Ok, booting the kernel." message.

I've added additional debugging to the kernel, and it really looks like it is either not jumping to the decompressed kernel, or it is crashing immediately thereafter.

I wanted to grab the .config file for the stage1 kernel image, and compare the config options, but don't know where to find it.

Any thoughts?

Check your Console-options...
Remember to compile in VGA text console and eventually Video mode selection support. Also remember support for PTYs and the PTS filesystem.
I had this problem too, and I had misconfigured something like this in the kernel...

Good luck... ;)

Unfortunately, I have my processor set correctly (a P4, and tried P2, JIC), and I already had the video selection enabled (as well as tried it disabled).

I believe I'm not even getting far enough into the kernel load to display the video selection menu...

I probably should ask on the gentoo-dev mailing list for where to find the .config for the gentoo stage1 kernel... Although I'm still hoping someone here can point me in the right direction! :)

Does it sound like the kernel is actually booting (e.g. little noises from the harddisk) without updating the display or is it just plain frozen?

Are you sure your file system and all that you need with that file system are checked?

I'm also getting this. I have rebooted many times, but then I emerged xfree and some other stuff and had to change the kernel and it doesn't work. I'm using Lilo and once i select to load gentoo it says "Loading Gentoo . . . . . . . . . . . " with exactly 11 dots every time.

I just fixed my problem. If your using lilo, you have to do another /sbin/lilo after compiling the kernel with some options. This might apply to grub as well but i don't know.
