PostPosted: Wed Jan 10, 2007 2:34 pm    Post subject: Modular X migration screen resolution problem Reply with quote

I recently moved to modular X and ran into a few issues most of which I've solved.

I do however have one remaining problem that should be obvious but apparently I'm missing it.

X refuses to go into 1600x1200 resolution regardless of what I do, giving me the generic (no mode of this name) message.
I've fixed a few things that were contributing to this, including moving from a 2.6.11 kernel to 2.6.18 (and an associated /dev/appgart | udev problem that accompanied it). I've generated new modelines tried things such as setting the vert and horiz sync ranges to rediculously high values (none of which were necessary for this rez under the monothic X)

I wouldn't post the whole Xorg log here normally, but it doesn't appear to be anything obvious... or maybe It is something stupid and I've just been staring at it for too long. I will snip out some of the more verbose and hopefully irrelevant sections.

Again, any help would be appreciated! thanks :)

Few questions...

Is there a particular reason your are using modelines?
Have you tried just setting "1600x1200" as an available res under 'Modes' ?
Is the i810 capable of producing 1600x1200 res?
Monitor capable of displaying 1600x1200?

thanks for replying, to answer:

went to modelines because "1600x1200" wasn't working, it's still in the modes list though... I just added the modelines as well. (you can still see the "Not using mode "1600x1200" (no mode of this name)" error about 3/4 of the way through the output file.

And yep, the same card and monitor were running fine in 1600x1200 on the monolithic Xorg package.

Its gonna be the modelines then....

From my experience, I've always set the modeline name format as this.

"1600x1200_85" "HRes x Vres _ RefRate"

The _ (underscore) being the key here. Any time I've set it to something else, like

"1280x720@85"

it has NEVER worked.
Also, I've never had a modeline work with decimal places in the Refresh Rate.

I'm currently running my mythbox with a "1280x720_60" modeline name.

That being said, see if these links help.

XF86 modeline generator
- 1600x1200 is a 4:3 ratio, obviously.
- the line it generates will give you an "HresxVres@RR". @ symbol didn't work for me; _ symbol did

modeline indepth

Thanks again, but still no joy.

I generated the modelines using gtf, and just entered them into xorg.conf the way gtf spat them out; but having it choke on the decimal seems reasonable so I removed those from both the monitor and screen sections so that the names matched and then restarted X to no avail.

Then I tried the generator link you used which produced different values, so I replaced both the 75Hz and the 65Hz entries with the modelines from the link and I'm still stuck in 1024x768 after restarting X.

Finally, I took and added the -HSync +Vsync parameters to the end of the new modelines (which the new generator did not supply) but it didn't seem to have any effect.
