I have one machine that is unstable with current gentoo kernels, so I want to try dropping back to the last known good kernel, 2.6.9, or maybe even 2.6.8.1.
I understand that I can extract the ebuild from an old portage snapshot and put it in /usr/local/portage, or can simply use a vanilla kernel (that's what I'll probably do).
But what other issues should I be aware of or watching for? What should I do about linux-headers, for example? I've never really understood what the separate headers stuff was all about anyway, so I need some advice on what to do about that.
Are alsa-headers/drivers going to be an issue? How about the vmware-modules?
Anything else I need to be aware of?
Thanks in advance! _________________ Anyone who puts a small gloss on a fundamental technology, calls it proprietary, and then tries to keep others from building on it, is a thief.

You shouldn't have more recent drivers than kernel. If you do something with the headers, you should recompile glibc. Be aware than current glibc may not be compatible with older headers and downgrading glibc is not possible. |
