I just finished installing AMD64 2006.1 on an HP Compaq nw8440 laptop. Fine otherwise, but the console framebuffer doesn't seem to be working. The laptop has a Mobility Radeon x1600, so I've configured the kernel for radeonfb. The screen's native resolution is 1680x1050, so the aspect ratio is 16:10. I've added "video=radeonfb:1680x1050-32@60" to the GRUB command line.
During boot, the video mode stays at the ugly default 80x25. dmesg | grep radeon just returns the solitary kernel config line from the top, nothing more. The livecd's framebuffer worked, however, but I suspect it uses vesafb and some lower, 4:3 resolution, and I'd like to see the native resolution and aspect ratio instead.
I've searched threads here that mention radeonfb, and read the fbsplash wiki HOWTO, and done some googling, but to no avail. I've tried booting with lower bit depths, but the result is the same.
Anyone have a similar setup working?

Try just "vga=0x31B video=radeonfb". Works fine for me.

I'll be damned. I could swear I tried the vga=0x31B just to get an undefined video mode error, but it works. Thanks!
I did, however, leave out the "video=radeonfb" entirely since I recompiled my kernel without radeonfb support. This is due to some googling that revealed that the x1600 is not supported by radeonfb.
EDIT: OK, I spoke too soon from excitement at seeing the framebuffer boot... turns out 0x31B is 1280x1024@16M, so while the framebuffer works, it's not at the correct resolution and appears horizontally stretched in my widescreen display. Well, better than simple text mode... |
